Annyeong, my fellow K-drama lovers! As we already know, the popularity of Korean dramas is reaching new heights with each passing day and I believe that it is totally worth the hype. For me, every K-drama that I watch is special because every show feels like a new journey and I enjoy every second of it. However, I will admit that I love dramas that are helmed by women. The reason is that the way they blend multiple genres in one show without losing the essence of the main one is mind-blowing. But having said that, it is true that most of the K-dramas are directed by male directors and being a director in the South Korean entertainment industry is difficult for women but you know, women are always prepared to achieve the unachievable. So, to appreciate their efforts, I decided to list down some amazing Korean dramas directed by female directors that deserve everyone’s undivided attention. 

So, let’s meet all the marvellous and talented women of k-drama land! 

Here Are 8 Amazing K-Dramas Directed By Female Directors That Should Be On Your Watchlist 

1. Coffee Prince – Lee Yoon Jung 

Coffee Prince starring Yoon Eun Hye and Gong Yoo is directed by Lee Yoon Jung. The story of this popular k-drama revolves around  Choi Han Gyul, owner of a coffee shop and Go Eun Chan, a hard-working girl who is often mistaken for a buy because of her appearance. He hires her but doesn’t know that she is not a guy and tells her to pretend to be his gay lover to escape blind dates arranged by his grandmother. 

The show, adapted from the novel of the same name by Lee Sunmi is critically acclaimed and it highlights many issues including same-sex relationships. The Lee Yoon Jung directorial is considered to be one of the most binge-worthy dramas of all time. 

2. Vincenzo – Kim Hee Won 

The thrilling series, Vincenzo featuring Song Joong Ki, Jeon Yeo-been, and Ok Taecyeon is helmed by Kim Hee Won. This 2021 Korean drama tells the story of an Italian mafia named Vincenzo Cassano aka Corn Salad (you know if you know). He flees to South Korea and tries to reclaim a hidden vault of gold but gets involved with lawyer Hong Cha Young and the tenants of Geumga Plaza. 

Kim Hee Won has quite effortlessly blended multiple genres in this drama and it is one of the main reasons why we are so obsessed with it. This k-drama, which is full of drama, humour, suspense, and action, is one of the best series on Netflix. 

 

3. Beyond Evil – Shim Na Yeon 

If you are someone who thinks that women directors can only direct chick flicks and women-centric series or films, then you should definitely watch Beyond Evil starring Shin Ha Kyun and Yeo Jin-goo. Helmed by director Shim Na Yeon, this k-drama revolves around two male cops – Lee Dong Sik and Han Joo Won. They both break the law in order to catch a serial killer but soon, many unexpected things get revealed. 

There is no doubt that Shim Na Yeon has created a masterpiece, the plotline of this k-drama is unique that will keep you on the edge of your seat the whole time. 

4. Love Alarm – Lee Na Jung 

Love Alarm, which is directed by Lee Na Jung features Kim So Hyun, Song Kang, and Jung Ga Ram and it is considered a modern classic. The story of this series takes place in a world where an app alerts people if someone likes them. It follows the story of Kim Jo Jo, a high school student who experiences love while dealing with personal issues. 

Director Lee Na Jung has directed many outstanding k-dramas but Love Alarm is one of her best works. 

 

5. Be Melodramatic – Kim Hye-young

Be Melodramatic, also known as Melo Suits Me stars three incredible South Korean actresses – Chun Woo-hee as Lim Jin Joo, Jeon Yeo-been as Lee Eun Jung, and Han Ji Eun as Hwang Jan Joo. The three best friends, who are in their thirties are trying to navigate their personal lives and careers in the media industry

Kim Hye-young along with Lee Byung Hun has created a Korean series which depicts female friendships accurately, it is true that this slice-of-life k-drama is a symbol of girl power and more.

6. Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol – Kim Min Kyung 

Directed by Kim Min Kyung, Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol starring Go Ara and Lee Jae Wook is a romantic comedy. It follows the complicated love story of a wealthy pianist, Goo Ra Ra who loses everything after her father’s death and a mysterious part-time worker, Sun Woo Joon. 

The lead couple’s chemistry is cute and natural, and Kim Min Kyung’s direction will keep you hooked. Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol is truly a hidden gem and it definitely deserves your attention.

 

7. Cheese In The Trap – Lee Yoon-Jung

Lee Yoon-Jung is the director of Cheese In The Trap featuring Kim Go-Eun and Park Hae Jin. This Korean series depicts the relationship between Hong Seol, a university student and her senior Yoo Jung (Park Hae-Jin).

Cheese In The Trap is a stand-out drama, the characters are unique and the storyline makes the drama worth a watch. 

8. Fight For My Way – Lee Na Jung 

Fight For My Way starring Par Seo Joon, Kim Ji-won, Song Ha Yoon, and Ahn Jae Hong, is another masterpiece created by Lee Na Jung. The popular series follows the lives of four friends aka ‘The Fantastic Four’. They navigate life and love while trying to claim their youth, hopes and dreams. But they also have to deal with the harsh realities which is a difficult task. 

Director Lee Na Jung said that through this k-drama, she wanted to tell a story that is realistic and sincere. She added that Fight For My Way is refreshing series that reflects the lives of young people.
