This K-drama has broken viewership records and each episode gains more viewers and why not the mix of historical settings and modern twists is keeping everyone hooked. But did you know the show’s King Yi Heon is based on a real historical figure, King Yeonsangun of the Joseon dynasty? Well, we’ve got some deets, so read on to know everything!
Known as a cruel ruler, Yeonsangun was a notorious king in Korean history. As per reports, he ruled the Joseon dynasty with fear and cruelty and turned royal institutions into places for his pleasure and forced many women into his palace.
In his early years, Yeonsangun ruled fairly well. But things took a turn when he found out the tragic truth about his mother’s death. This discovery made him extremely angry and therefore he took out his rage on the women of Joseon and brought thousands into his palace for selfish reasons.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty is a creative spin on this history. It is based on a web novel called Surviving as Yeonsangun’s Chef by Park Guk-jae.
And the story follows a modern woman who travels back in time and becomes the royal chef for the king. Well, since the day episode 1 was released, fans have been loving how the show mixes modern and historic Korean elements.
