We often think that Indian society in the past was regressive and downward for women. While some aspects of the social strata indicate that we overlook some practices and customs that did benefit women and gave them agency. In an exclusive conversation with The Male Feminist hosted by Siddhaarth Aalambayan, motivational speaker and spiritual guide Jaya Kishori reflects on how traditional Indian households used to be dominated by women and how these responsibilities have evolved over time.

Jaya Kishori described how roles were divided meticulously in the past. The traditional homes of that time were fully controlled by women. “This is the reason we call it Nani Ka Ghar,” explained Kishori with an example. Men were responsible for chores outside the house while women inside. Jaya Kishori also said that men were not allowed to interfere in household affairs, and women had total authority over it. “They knew how they controlled the household and made the rules.”

However, Jaya also says that while this model worked in the past, things are changing now. Since women have also entered the workforce and are working to earn a living, the burden of a household should not fully fall on them and should be equally distributed by them and their partner. The responsibility of raising and taking care of children is not only the mother’s but also the father’s.

Men who live alone for work are also equipped with the skills of managing a household now; hence, times and society have changed. Hence, Jaya Kishori feels that we should adapt to the evolving nature of society.
