Janhvi Kapoor Defends Indian Representation At Met Gala Against ‘Chandivalification’ Label

The South Asian representation at the MET Gala 2025 was top-notch, with faces like Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Kiara Advani, Diljit Dosanjh, Isha Ambani, and more. Watching them walk the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was a proud moment. While many praised the celebs, others on the internet labelled it as ‘Chandivalification of Met’. And actor Janhvi Kapoor has slammed the netizens for having a classist attitude.

The actor shared her thoughts in the comments area of an Instagram picture by Diet Sabya. The post was titled “DSji, how come there is a sudden influx of Indians at the Met?” Is this the Chandivalification of Met?” discussed how many are mocking Indian celebrities who attended the fashion extravaganza and questioning whether the event has lost its exclusivity. Janhvi also joined in and expressed her opinions.

She wrote, “It was high time. Our artisans and designers are the best in the world, they deserve the spotlight on a global stage like the Met.. As do our icons (heart icon)”. She asked people about how we shouldn’t, as a nation, be happy that we are finally getting our due, and walking on such platforms isn’t aspirational anymore. Janhvi questioned the behaviour of classism of Indians towards themselves as a result of the colonial times.

She further highlighted, “For decades, the work of our artisans has been exported from our country and put on global platforms without credit. For decades, they have borrowed our fabrics, our embroidery, our textiles, our jewellery and presented them as a creation of which they are the rightful owners. I’m glad our people are finally getting the chance to represent so much of our work and heritage. If anything, the sense of pride I felt seeing our artists and garments at the Met made the whole affair seem even more magical”.
