Is Marge Dead In The Simpsons Season 36 Finale? Here’s What We Know

After over three decades of yellow-tinted shenanigans in Springfield, The Simpsons has somehow held its principal family unit together. However, things took a tragic turn in the season 36 finale, titled Estranger Things, which left us all wondering: Is Marge Simpson actually gone? It’s an understandable question. Throughout the 36-year run of the show, very few characters have died for good, typically smaller ones like Maude Flanders or the ubiquitous barfly Larry. So when the series finale showed a flash-forward in which Marge had died, it unleashed a storm of confusion and worry on social media.

What Happened To Marge In The Simpsons?

In Estranger Things, we’re shown a version of the future where Marge has died and is remembered fondly by her family. Homer, now old and visibly grieving, attends her funeral along with adult versions of Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. Her gravestone describes her with love and a touch of humour, marking the end of an era for the Simpson matriarch.

But that’s not all. Lisa, now a high-ranking executive with the NBA, finds a touching video recording Marge made before her passing. On the recording, Marge reminds her children to reconcile and take care of one another, something they’ve yet to do. The recording gives rise to an emotional turning point, especially for Lisa and Bart, who’s currently operating an illegal retirement home in the family home.

By the time the episode ends, the family is reunited, somewhat, watching a reunion version of Itchy and Scratchy together. Meanwhile, Marge is in heaven, peeking down at the improvement in her family with happiness. In a bit of comic irony, she’s accompanied by deceased Ringo Starr, and the two of them set off towards a heavenly buffet, with Marge remarking on the lack of rules in heavenly romances.

So is Marge really dead? Technically, yes, within the universe of this future-dated episode. But be assured that this passing takes place outside of the present-day timeline of the show. It’s a foretelling of what could be decades in the future, so the present incarnation of Marge remains most definitely alive within the overall story.
