Almost a month since the sudden passing away of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, his family is now embroiled in a complicated and high-stakes real estate battle. Sunjay, the chairman of auto components behemoth Sona Comstar, died on June 12, allegedly due to cardiac arrest. But his mother, Rani Kapur, has cast doubt on the cause of death and is now battling to retain what she says is her rightful half of the business and property, valued at over 30,000 crore.
Karishma Kapoor Stakes Claim In Late Ex-Husband Sunjay Kapoor’s Empire
The drama has reached a new level with news that Sunjay’s ex-wife, actress Karisma Kapoor, is reportedly gearing up to stake a claim over his property. A report by Dainik Jagran indicated that Karisma, who was married to Sunjay between 2003 and 2016 and shares two children with him, is planning legal action to secure her children’s future.
While Karisma has herself made no public statement, lawyers suggest that the lawsuit, should it be brought, may be founded on the rights of her children as legal beneficiaries under their father’s will.
On the other hand, Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has come out openly. Addressing her lawyer, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, she stated that she does not think her son’s death was as simple as was reported early on. She also claimed she was coerced to sign legal documents immediately after his death and has since requested that the next Annual General Meeting of Sona Comstar be adjourned until the issue is addressed.

“She believes the circumstances of his death need to be looked at more closely,” Gaggar told ANI. “And she’s not comfortable with the pace at which certain business decisions are being taken after his passing.”
Sunjay Kapur’s funeral was held on June 19 at Lodhi Road Crematorium in Delhi. After his divorce from Karisma, he married model Priya Sachdev and had another child, Azarias. To date, no formal legal complaint has been made, but the conflict is likely to escalate, with more than one party likely to stake a claim over one of India’s most high-profile family fortunes.
