Even after continuously fighting to make the public understand equal rights and respect, big figures sometimes forget about their responsibility to teach the audience the right. In a similar situation, Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty’s remarks about parenting and marriage received major backlash from the internet due to their patriarchal nature. The actor pushed the infamous notion of ‘adjusting’ in a marriage, and we don’t quite agree.
What Suneil Shetty Said
In a recent chat with Pinkvilla, Sunil Shetty expressed his views on marriage and parenting. He mentioned how today’s generation isn’t patient and how one should ‘compromise’ in a marriage. According to him, marriages evolve after some time, where you have to live for each other. The chat got worse when he came to discuss parenting and indirectly said how childcare is a woman’s job.
Suniel Shetty believes that if a husband is busy building his career, then it’s the woman’s responsibility to take care of the child. He did agree that the father should also be involved in this, but his words weren’t well-received on the internet. This triggered a flood of backlash online with people asking him to remain ‘silent.’ Several people pointed out that these attitudes reflect a frequent generational problem: misogyny is passed down as custom or practice.
In a previous interview, the actor also praised women who gave ‘natural’ birth and called them warriors. This statement also received backlash on the internet, with many pointing out the male chauvinism. A man commenting on a woman’s choices when he hasn’t experienced one-third of the pain and trauma that one goes through during birth isn’t something we need in the 21st century.
