‘House Of The Dragon’ Writer Says Show Wont Have “Sexual Violence” Like ‘Game Of Thrones’ Did

It is very common for shows to come under controversy for depicting a sensitive issue especially if it comes to the audience in a certain way that might not have been anticipated by the makers. Similarly, the famous TV series Game Of Thrones came under heated controversy when the show had many scenes that depicted sexual violence against women. The criticism elevated when in the fifth season, Sophie Turner’s character, Sansa Stark was raped on her wedding night. Now, with its prequel  House of the Dragon just about to release, viewers cannot help but wonder if such violence will continue to be shown on the show. However, the writer of the show Sara Hess has spoken on this and has said that the show does not intend to depict sexual violence against women like that of Game Of Thrones.

The doubts about the show showing scenes of sexual violence gained momentum when the director Miguel Sapochnik said in an interview, that violence will still be a part of the show. So to clarify the doubts about the statement, Sara Hess has said that there will no depiction of sexual violence against women, as per the interview given to Vanity Fair.

She further said that she is proud that the show rather focuses to show violence against women that is very much in-built into the patriarchal system. Hess further stated that the House of the Dragon will show violence that is not sexual.

Hess also highlighted that there are many historical shows that show men as the powerful and strong sex when it comes to institutions like marriage. Hess further stated that she is proud of the fact that in the first half of the show women are shown to be submissive and do according to the man’s will. Shedding light on the same she said that this is not shown because they define such men as “rapists or abusers” rather these men just fail to see the traumatising effects of their actions on women because it is very much normalised by the society.
