Hollywood has been struck with tragedy again following the death of legendary actor Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa. The couple was discovered deceased in their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities have stated that there are no immediate signs of foul play, but an investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause and time of death.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the heartbreaking news late Wednesday night. He stated that deputies responded to a welfare check at the couple’s residence in the Santa Fe Summit community. Upon arrival, they found Hackman, 94, and Arakawa, 61, unresponsive. Their dog was also found dead at the scene. Law enforcement officials have refrained from speculating on potential causes of death until a full autopsy and toxicology reports are conducted.

The news of Hackman’s passing has sent shockwaves through Hollywood and beyond. Known for his remarkable career spanning over five decades, Hackman was one of the most respected actors of his generation. He won two Academy Awards, Best Actor for The French Connection (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (1992). His extensive filmography includes memorable performances in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Mississippi Burning (1988), The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), and the Superman films where he played the iconic villain Lex Luthor.

Hackman, who was born in San Bernardino, California, in 1930, had an early start in the U.S. Marine Corps before transitioning into acting. After studying at the Pasadena Playhouse, he struggled initially but eventually made his mark in Hollywood with his breakout role in Bonnie and Clyde. He quickly became known for his commanding screen presence and ability to portray complex characters.

His wife, Betsy Arakawa, was a talented classical pianist and had been a pillar of support throughout Hackman’s later years. The couple married in 1991 and lived a relatively private life in New Mexico after Hackman’s retirement from acting in 2004. Despite stepping away from Hollywood, Hackman remained an influential figure in the industry and even pursued a successful second career as a novelist.

For the unversed, Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg was also found dead in her apartment on February 26, 2025. The actress was reportedly struggling with health issues and had also underwent a liver transplant surgery.
