Daniel Radcliffe Believes Child Actors Need Therapy To Deal With The Spotlight
The Now You See Me 2 star appeared on an episode of One Nightstand With Daniel Radcliffe. Speaking about how young actors face intense pressure in the public eye, he declared that therapy ought to be mandatory for child performers.
With many former child actors revealing their struggles, his remarks serve as a reminder to start counselling sessions even before one thinks they need it. Speaking about an instance of a former child star dying by s*icide, he said it was important to normalise therapy. He added that the “tragic stories” of recent years affected him.
Radcliffe felt that while child actors’ lives may seem perfect on paper, therapy might help them deal with the truth of how “crushing” it can be behind the scenes. He thought that it should be “built into the system.”
Drawing from his own experience as a 12-year-old who suddenly became famous, he thought himself “lucky.” Surrounded by veteran actors who understood what he was going through, Daniel Radcliffe’s growing-up years were largely positive. Although the 2000s were filled with prejudiced takes on mental health and counselling, his co-stars made sure he got through in one piece.
After Harry, the actor, went on to dip his toe into theatre and Broadway musicals. Starring in award-winning productions such as Equus, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, and, most recently, Merrily We Roll Along‘s 2023 revival.
