Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Breaks Captain Marvel’s Record For Biggest Opening Weekend For Film By Woman Director

Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie has been painting the world pink for a while now. And ever since the release, the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starrer has been winning the internet for its social commentary on feminism and patriarchy. On the other hand is Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece, Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy which chronicles the life of the father of the atomic bomb, theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. And while both films are doing well worldwide, the Greta Gerwig directorial is taking the global box office by storm. Barbie has now made history by becoming the first ever film directed by a woman to collect a whopping $155 million in the opening weekend.

Greta Gerwig’s film, Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has made history by becoming the first ever film directed by a woman to make a big debut by collecting $155 million in its opening weekend. This record was earlier held by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directorial Captain Marvel (2019)which made $153 million in its opening weekend. Before Captain Marvel, it was Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman which made a $103 million debut in 2017.

But that’s not all, Barbie also broke the record of the film with the biggest opening weekend of the year which was earlier held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie which made $146 million. And guess what? In India, Christopher Nolan’s Cillian Murphy starrer Oppenheimer is leading the charts as opposed to Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. As per media reports, Oppenheimer is doing better than Barbie in India.

This comes as a surprise considering that both films are of different genres. Barbie is a satire on patriarchy and performative feminism and Oppenheimer is an epic biographical thriller film on the life of the theoretical physicist who played an important role in the development of the first nuclear weapons under the Manhattan Project.
