Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Becomes First Film By A Female Director To Earn $1 Billion Worldwide!
This is big!

Given that we are living in times where OTT has gained much more popularity than theatres, not any or every film can do wonders at the box office. However, when films with good scripts, direction and performances get a theatrical release, then nothing can beat that too. In the last few days of July, we saw such back-to-back super-hit releases. One of them was Greta Gerwig’s Barbie led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. And the good news ain’t stopping for the makers any time soon because reportedly the film has earned $1 billion worldwide. And well, it is still going strong in the theatres but by making it to the $1 billion mark, Gerwig’s film has also broken some of the previous records.

- Greta Gerwig is now holding the first position in the list of female directors to have a film in the $1 billion club. With this, Gerwig has surpassed film directors like Betty Thomas and Patty Jenkins among others.
- For Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Barbie has become the highest-earning film in their careers till now. Before this, the movies that did well at the BO for Margot and Ryan were Suicide Squad and Notebook respectively. However, these films were still very much behind the earnings of Barbie globally.
- Another very interesting thing recorded by Greta Gerwig was the opening weekend earning. Not very often do we see people rushing to the theatres to watch a film helmed by a female director. In the opening weekend itself, the film made an earning of $162 million, as per reports that too when it had to compete against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer led by Cillian Murphy. Insane!
