This year was a huge one for Indian artists as they dominated multiple 2026 Grammys categories. One of the desi artists, Anoushka Shankar truly stood out because she was nominated in two categories– Best Global Music Performance and Best Global Music Album. Many thought that she would grace the event’s red carpet but surprisingly, the singer decided to skip. Sharing a note on social media, the musician revealed that she chose to skip the Grammys for mental health reasons.
Anoushka Shankar Absent From 2026 Grammys
While highlighting two of her 2026 Grammy nominations, Anoushka Shankar stated that it feels really good not to be in Los Angeles. She mentioned making a conscious decision to attend the Grammys and be on the road in India instead. Anoushka wanted to practice what she preached, which was that “awards don’t matter like the actual connection playing music for people affords us as artists.” The sitarist also revealed that she wanted to take care of her mental health. Anoushka added that sometimes the process of spending thousands of dollars on flying, marketing, attending and getting sucked into the machine, hugely anxious about outfits and red carpets, starting to hope winning the honour and then not winning can take a toll.
Anoushka further said that there is always a huge mainstream artist dropping into the global categories who has more money to spend on marketing and that there is always an artist who chooses to spend months networking, attending nominee events and ensuring their music and name lands in front of the voters. She mentioned that she did not say that from bitterness but to acknowledge what goes on behind the scenes. The sitarist made sure to say that if she won during the ceremony, it would be wonderful, but it truly didn’t matter in the deeper context to her. Check her post and entire caption below!
