MAMI Film Festival 2024: From All We Imagine As Light To Santosh, 5 Films Directed By Female Filmmakers You Shouldn’t Miss!

All set for the most-awaited and happening film festival of the year? The MAMI Film Festival 2024 begins on October 18 and the opening movie is All We Imagine As Light directed by Payal Kapadia. Moreover, this year, there is an interesting lineup of films directed by some amazing female filmmakers and we are eagerly looking forward to them. The films not only have powerful stories to tell but are also cinematic experiences that shouldn’t be missed. Here’s what the lineup looks like!

All We Imagine As Light By Payal Kapadia

We are all excited about the opening film at MAMI this year, aren’t we? All We Imagine As Light is a Malayalam film directed by Payal Kapadia, starring Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam and Hridhu Haroon. The film revolves around the story of three women living in Mumbai, struggling to make ends meet while simultaneously trying to find themselves amid the hustle-bustle of the city. The women finally reconnect with themselves after a road trip to Ratnagiri, a beach town that provides them comfort and peace. The film was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival and it also won the Grand Prix Award. It’s a must-watch!

Santosh By Sandhya Suri

Another recommended film is Santosh by Sandhya Suri which is set in the rural areas of northern India. It tells the story of a widowed woman who takes up the responsibilities of her husband’s duty as a police constable. The film is a crime drama but very much more than that. Santosh takes up the investigation of a young girl’s death but the film goes on to explore the life of a female police officer working in an environment governed by men. It also deals with layers of corruption and power.

Girls Will Be Girls By Shuchi Talati

Girls Will Be Girls is an Indo-French drama starring Preeti Panigrahi, Kani Kusruti and Kesav Binoy Kiran. This feature film revolves around the story of a 16-year-old girl Mira who explores romance, love, sexuality and more after going to a boarding school in the Himalayan foothills. The film also shows a strained mother-daughter relationship and how she navigates it.

Beyond The Horizon By Disha Pawar

This is an extraordinary story about Mr Rajendra Bhosale who lived dual lives for 28 long years. In the day, he worked as a bus driver in Mumbai, and after his duties hours were over, Rajendra Bhosale turned into a magician and bubble artist. The short film written and directed by Disha Pawar is an interesting story about how a man worked hard to make a livelihood but also kept his passion alive. Are you watching this one at MAMI 2024?

Village Rockstars By Rima Das

It’s a heartwarming and thought-provoking story about a 10-year-old girl who becomes friends with a group of boys. She dreams of becoming a popular rockstar. This Assamese film is set in the Kalardiya village of Assam and follows the story of Dhunu. Despite all the hardships and calamities that come her way, the little girl does not let go of her dream that one day she will have a band and a guitar. The lead character is played by Bhanita Das.
