Whatever a K-pop idol says or does often turns into a big online debate, especially for BTS members. Recently, leader RM, also known as Kim Namjoon, was accused of shading his members’ English skills. The claims came from a line in their new song Aliens on the Arirang album and from comments he made in an interview with Zane Lowe. It spread like wildfire online, but ARMY quickly defended him. The drama started with RM’s rap in Aliens. He mentioned being the only one who speaks English, then said that is how they win or succeed. Some people felt this sounded like he was bragging about himself while making the others seem less skilled in English. It caused havoc across social media platforms. But this wasn’t it.
Things heated up more after the group’s interview with Zane Lowe. RM spoke about difficulties during album recording sessions. He explained that discussions with some producers were tough because they could not speak English well. A few fans connected this to the song line and expressed anger. One social media user wrote, “No wonder he’s shading his members in their new song 😭. Another social media user wrote, ““Then who told you to make a full English album?”
Following which, fans, aka ARMYs, stepped in to protect him. They said his words were not meant to hurt anyone or act superior. Many explained that the lyric in Aliens was just playful or part of talking about their challenges as a non-English group breaking into the global market. They reminded everyone how close the members are and how they often tease each other about small things with no hard feelings.

One user wrote, “What is bitter…? like bruh what the fuc*k did you see bitter here..? he was saying thay jokingly. My parents and siblings literally tease me worse than this bcz of my poor English and it always make me laugh. Brainless people can’t understand what close friendship means lol.” Another user wrote, “y’all have a problem with everything, I’m sure bts would laugh at your face for your tom foolery.”
