Exclusive: “Dressing Up Doesn’t Mean Inviting Men To Hit On Me”, Says Soundarya Sharma. Hear Hear!

Society has a notion that women apply makeup and wear pretty clothes to attract attention, and this is the funniest thing I have ever heard. Women dress up because it makes them feel confident, and good about themselves. Attracting male attention and earning compliments are not even on the list. It sets my blood boiling when I hear people say, “Oh, she’s definitely “asking for it” dressed like that!” I want to tell them that women are asking for equal pay and not male attention, and there’s a difference between the both, you dimwits! In the latest episode of The Male Feminist, Soundarya Sharma stresses upon how disgusting this mindset is of society, and we completely agree with her.

In a conversation with Siddhaarth Aalambayan, Bigg Boss 16 star Soundarya Sharma talks about how people tend to assume that a woman is craving attention or “is asking for it” when she dresses up nicely. She said, “I wanted to be an actor, and would often dress up well while heading out.” Soundarya said that this was mistaken as that “inviting attention”.

Calling out this dirty mindset, Soundarya Sharma said that she loves dressing up and wearing makeup as she was often restricted from doing so in her strict household. “But that does not mean I am inviting men to hit on me,” Sharma says. The 28-year-old actress went on to add that people take this mindset ahead to victim shame a woman if a crime happens to her.

Elaborating on the same, Soundarya said that in such an environment, people tell a woman that she must have invited unwarranted attention which must have led to the crime against her. She also went on to explain that by the time people realise that it is not the woman’s clothes are not the problem, it is too late as she is already traumatised and conditioned.

It is sad that even in 2023, we are holding a woman responsible for the crime against her because of what she was wearing. Are we progressing or are we going back in time?
