In an exclusive conversation on Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, actor Sunny Leone candidly discussed the enduring stereotypes and gender biases that affect women globally. Known for her outspoken nature and advocacy for gender equality, Sunny shared insights from her own experiences, highlighting the often subtle ways gender roles are reinforced in society.
Sunny Leone On Gender Bias
One significant anecdote Sunny shared was about her first major purchase, a Tudor Audi, which she bought with the financial help of her father. The arrangement was for each to pay half, a memory that Sunny reflects on as a pivotal moment in her journey toward financial independence. This experience brought up a broader discussion on the stereotype that questions women’s driving abilities, a notion Sunny firmly rebuts. Addressing the stereotype head-on, Sunny remarked, “Ek thappad milta hai. If a guy in the US told a girl, you’re a girl and you’re a really bad driver and women are bad drivers, literally ek thappad milta tha.” This statement, which translates to “a slap would be received,” underscores the consequences of such sexist remarks in different cultures, emphasizing that such behaviour is unacceptable.
Sunny believes these biases stem from upbringing and the societal environment. “I think it comes from your parents, it comes from where you’re from and the things that are being taught to you, like when your dad says don’t throw like a girl or don’t cry like a girl, it’s also very bad. I think it definitely comes from home and we have to stop it there,” she explained.
