Actor Mallika Sherawat has been breaking all the stereotypes of how a mainstream Bollywood actress should be since the beginning. The actor has always done unconventional roles and voiced her opinions on the regressive thoughts of Indian society. But she wasn’t taught about equality in her childhood, in fact, her parents never supported her career. In an exclusive interview with Hauterrfly’s show The Male Feminist with host Siddhaarth Aalambayan, Mallika Sherawat discussed it all.
Mallika Sherawat On Growing Up In A Regressive Household
During the interview, Mallika Sherawat discussed about her childhood. She said, “I got evolved out of patriarchy. My parents used to treat me and my brother very differently. I grew up watching this difference between genders. I used to feel very bad about my parents doing this, I was a child back then so I couldn’t understand but now I do.” She further added, “Now I understand why people invest in a boy’s education more than the girls’ and why they always pass their wealth onto the grandson rather than the granddaughter. So you know I grew up watching all of this.”
She added, “I used to feel bad but then I saw I wasn’t the only one suffering through this. My parents gave me everything from a good education to a shelter. But unhone mujhe ek acchi soch nahi di, cache vichar nahi die. They didn’t give me freedom, they never tried to understand what I wanted to do with life and what made me happy. All parents must ask their children this. I didn’t receive any love or appreciation and was always told to sit in the corner.”
Mallik Sherawat said, “I was very good in sports but my family never gave me permission thinking I would get too masculine and no one would marry me. My family wasn’t happy when I was born. My mother went into depression because society was forcing her to deliver a boy child. Instead of congratulating her, they used to taunt her.” This is so sad and we are glad she got out of it.
