Reflecting on her journey and upbringing, Mallika Sherawat revealed that she came from a deeply patriarchal family, where her birth as a girl was met with disappointment. “I had to face many patriarchal beliefs and practices growing up,” she said. However, despite these challenges, she expressed gratitude for the positive male influences she encountered later in life, particularly Mahesh Bhatt.
“I have met some fantastic men in my life who have shaped the woman I am today. Some of them have given me wings to fly,” she shared. Highlighting Mahesh Bhatt’s pivotal role in her career and personal growth, Mallika explained, “Bhatt saab has had a huge influence on me. He helped me break free from the patriarchal shackles I was bound by. We had long conversations, and during Murder, just being around him and seeing the progressive women in his family made a big impact on me.”
Mallika emphasized the supportive and safe environment Bhatt created on his sets, noting that despite the intimate nature of the scenes she had to perform, she felt comfortable under his direction. “Bhatt saab is a very progressive man, and his sets are always safe, especially for women. Even during those intimate scenes in Murder, I felt secure. Of course, it’s a bit uncomfortable when there are 50 crew members watching, but Bhatt saab made sure I felt at ease,” she stated. When asked about her co-star Emraan Hashmi, Mallika had only positive things to say. “Emraan is an absolute gentleman. ”
