Exclusive: Malavika Mohanan On Being Trolled For Being Skinny: “It Was Very Harsh…”

One thing the South Indian film industry is renowned for is its obsession with the navel. Many stars and directors have acted out such scenes in mainstream films where the focus of the shot is the heroine’s navel. While we never understood why that happened, during a recent conversation on Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist hosted by Siddhaarth Aalambayan, Malavika Mohanan opened up about the same. Here’s the full conversation.

Malavika Mohanan On Navel Obsession

Talking about the industry’s navel obsession, Malavika Mohanan said, “I used to be perplexed earlier too because I’ve grown up in Bombay, so navels being obsessed over was a new phenomenon for me too. So, these videos of actresses’ navels getting shot were new to me, too. So, yes, it’s a very real thing.”

Talking about the curve obsession, Makavika revealed that she was trolled for being skinny when she joined the industry at 21. She said, “When I did my first film, Pottam Pole, I was 21 years old and I was trolled so much for being skinny. And I was very skinny, gawky, because I was 21 years old, and my body changed as I went into my mid twenties, and 27 was when I thought I got a bit curvier. At that time, I was trolled massively on Facebook. People would call me things like ‘skin on bones’ and many more things with degrading language.

It really affected me at the start because I was at an impressionable age. But it’s not fair to fat shame or skinny shame anyone and make them feel bad about their body. But I think that the thick skin comes with time and experience, and I’ve learnt to cope with it.”

Malavika Mohanan is currently shooting the next schedule of Hridayapoorvam with Mohanlal in Pune, where she’ll be stationed for the remainder of the month.
