There are very few films that hit the right chord with film fanatics, and in recent times, Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies turned out to be that heartwarming watch. It was produced under Aamir Khan Productions. During an exclusive chat with us, Kiran Rao spoke about her experience of working with ex-partner Aamir Khan on her latest film, and the creative differences that she faced with him. Laapataa Ladies director also recalled the tug of war they had during the casting of Manohar’s character in the film that was eventually played by Ravi Kishan.
Kiran Rao On Working With Aamir Khan
Kiran Rao was highly praised for her film Laapataa Ladies, a light-hearted watch with many subtle social commentaries on the problem of patriarchy. Aamir Khan’s production house produced the film. When we asked Kiran Rao whether she faced any creative differences with Aamir on the set, the director said, “We always have our tug of war in various stages, and a little one happened during the casting of Manohar (Ravi Kishan). Aamir was very keen on playing the role and wanted to be Manohar, but I was very worried that he would outweigh or imbalance, and tilt the expectations of Manohar that people have in the wrong direction. So that was one of the places where we pushed and pulled a little bit. But in this film strangely, we did not have too many of those, once he and I agreed that Aamir should not play Manohar, his responses on the film only helped me. Aamir helped with the editing too, or what should be thrust of our marketing, he came in at those stages. So yes, I haven’t had to negotiate in any other department.”
