Jonita Gandhi Recalls Facing Racist Comments

On being asked if she faced any racist comments in Canada or India, Jonita Gandhi said, “Oh, yeah, I got racist comments there for sure. But I was more bothered about the bullying about, like, my daadi (beard). It wasn’t a daadi; I had side locks.” In response, the host was all praises and said, “I think they make, like, the Delhi Punjabi ladkiya very cute.” To which Jonita Gandhi responded, “That’s really nice and sweet and positive. I wish that they had that where I grew up.” Further, the host asked what did they call her?

In response, the singer said, “They used to call me Godzilla, bro. I think they just thought I was ugly or whatever. I used to come home and cry. Also, I used to have, like, a little diary that I would write in. I had a crush on this person, and I would like to write his name, and it’d be like the Punjabi boy in my class. And even he would be making fun of me. I’m like, ‘Bro, I’m your kind.’ Your sister probably has facial hair. It’s not cool. And then I’d, yeah, cry about it. It’s okay, though. Look, look what happened now. You seeing my new music video. It’s like, if that version of me saw this, she would not believe it.” More power to you!
