Item songs in the Indian film industry are always a much-debated topic. While many feel that they objectify women through men’s gaze, others think of them as harmless and fun songs to dance to. Huma Qureshi On Item Songs
When asked if she ever felt hesitant about doing an item song, Huma Qureshi said, “Never, and I’ll tell you why. Because as long as I am embracing my own sensuality and I’m enjoying doing it, and as long as I know the people around me are not showing it cheaply, I think it’s fine. There’s a difference between this and a male gaze. Male gaze is when you portray a woman’s body in such a way that you are selling it, and the other way is to celebrate it. And it’s important also because just because you’re a feminist, it doesn’t mean that you will be dry and not glamorous.
And it’s all about dancing, which I love. I love dancing, and I feel that I don’t get to do it as often. I did it in Monica, O My Darling, Gangubai, and Malik. It’s really fun doing a song, and I love it.” What are your thoughts on this? Let us know. Huma Qureshi was recently seen in Delhi Crime season 3 alongside Shefali Shah. She also starred in the fourth season of the famous franchise called Maharani, and is currently receiving much love for both projects.
