Indian film has evolved to a lot of extent in terms of producing more female-led films. However, there are still many stereotypical ideas attached to it which need to be addressed. A very hard-hitting film on women’s empowerment titled Sharmajee Ki Beti has just been released on Prime Video. During an interview with the cast, I had the opportunity to discuss the apprehensions that the film industry still has about female-led films since director Tahira Kashyap has already spoken about it. During this conversation, actor Divya Dutta spoke at length about why movies like Sharmajee Ki Beti are really important in the society we live in. Read our exclusive here.
Divya Dutta On Female-Led Films
In a very insightful conversation with the cast of Sharmajee Ki Beti- Divya Dutta, Sakshi Tanwar and Saiyami Kher, I got to learn more about the industry’s approach to female-led films. During this conversation, Divya Dutta gave a very thoughtful answer. She said, “I feel we have been a very male-dominated industry. The so-called heroes used to always derive the film and the box-office collections. Today also if you see, we like we have come a long way but people will still ask, film ka hero kaun hai (who is the hero in this film?). It’s the first thing they ask. Also when I got into films, my roles were very different and were unconventional, and I was sometimes romancing the hero, so they did not know where they wanted to place me because everything was in connection with the hero. So then, I was sometimes playing the villain, sometimes the hero and then a friend, sometimes a comedy. So makers did not know where to place me as I was not much into romancing the hero. Later, they started calling me the unconventional hero. It’s been quite a journey. My fight was never with the films that were offered because they have been great. My journey was to always break this image to be bound by something, as it was always hero hero hero.”
Talking about her friend’s reaction to the trailer of her upcoming film Sharmajee Ki Beti, Divya Dutta said, “When I asked for my friend’s opinion of the film, the instant reaction was that it’s a female-led film and it looks good. But I was bothered by the point of they mentioning that it’s a female-led film. Why is that even necessary? So yeah, we need such films, we need to celebrate the women until the day comes when this normalises when we don’t have to demarcate and say, celebrate their day or give them equal respect. So to reach that level, we really need films like this and these characters. Films like Sharmajee Ki Beti are very crucial to be a part of the society we live in.”
Divya Dutta also spoke about the importance of visuals and said that it is a very strong medium to put forth important conversations before the audience.
