Most people feel that they have a free pass to comment on an actress’s body, weight and appearance. When working in the film industry, an actress is expected to fit into whatever the current beauty standard is. Trolls on social media are day by day only getting more brutal. You’re either too fat or too skinny or too dark or too fair, it’s never enough.

In the latest episode of Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, our host Siddhaarth Aalambayan is joined by actress Malavika Mohanan, known for her roles in Tamil and Malayalam films like Thangalaan  and Master talks about her experience in the film industry, dealing with trolls, industry beauty standards and interactions with fans.

While talking about working in the South film industry, Malavika notes how actresses are preferred to be more on the curvy side there. Malavika opened up about being skinny shamed during her debut days when she did her first film, Pattam Pole in 2013. “I was a skinny and gawky 21 year old and I was trolled so much for it” Malavika recalled. She talked about how comments were made about her body on social media platforms, mainly Facebook calling her derogatory names like “skin on bones” and asked her to “go gain some weight.”

The actress shared how these remarks really made her struggle. She goes on to say how such degrading comments have a deep affect on people whom they are made about, especially when they are young and impressionable.
