Emraan Hashmi Explains How Haq Film Is About Women’s Voice. We Love A Woke King!

Emraan Hashmi is back with his latest film, Haq, and it’s not for the faint-hearted. The project mainly centres around women’s voices and equality, which is bound to provoke thoughts about female empowerment among the audience. Recently, Hasmi dropped some truth bombs about how women have to pay the price for men’s mentality that they can do whatever they want. For the unversed, Haq is based on the Mohd. Ahmad Khan vs Shah Bano Begum case. Not only was this case very controversial because Shah Bano demanded maintenance from her husband after 90 days (the period of iddat as per Islamic Law), but it was also controversial because the Supreme Court favoured the right to maintenance to divorced Muslim women. And we’re looking forward to watching this film, but before that, read on about what Emraan said.

Emraan Hashmi On Women’s Voice

During his conversation with ANI, Emraan Hashmi stressed that his film, Haq, is about a woman’s voice, equality, and “right to dignity”, adding that this is a story for men also. According to the actor, the biases that men have regarding the mentality that they can do whatever they can and that it’s a “man’s world,” women have to pay the price for that with their dignity. He added that this has been reflected in his movie. Hashmi also told them that if one introspects, they will find value in the project. He went on to add that this film is “for men as well.” The actor called Haq a “pro-women” movie and clarified that it doesn’t aim to hurt any religion or community.  At this point, we’re just happy that influential celebrities are talking about such important things.

More On Haq

Emraan Hashmi is currently gearing up for his next film, Haq, alongside Yami Gautam. This project is inspired by the historic Shah Bano case. Shah Bano was divorced by her husband, Mohd. Ahmed Khan in 1978, but in 1979, she filed a case seeking maintenance from her husband. At the time, under Islamic Law, a woman was only entitled to maintenance for 90 days after divorce during the period of iddat. However, the Supreme Court favoured her and saw the law as discriminatory because it denied Muslim women the basic right to maintenance. This judgement drew criticism from the Muslim community, with mounting political pressure to nullify the judgement as it turned into a case law which supported women’s rights.

This historic verdict led to the passing of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Divorce) Act, 1986, which nullified the Supreme Court’s judgment. However, later judgments of the Supreme Court went on to uphold the case law of the Shah Bano judgement and nullified the new law. As far as the Haq film goes, it is slated to release in theatres across India on November 7.
