Ekta Kapoor Slams Anurag Kashyap For Mocking Saas-Bahu Dramas, Calls Him “Classist, Dumb”
Ekta Kapoor slams Anurag Kashyap for his comment on saas-bahu content and calls his mindset classist in Instagram stories.

Producer Ekta Kapoor and Director Anurag Kashyap are beefing, and it’s starting to turn ugly! The TV show producer has bashed Anurag Kashyap for his recent comments about the ‘saas bahu’ dramas, which Ekta is known to pioneer. She called the Gangs of Wasseypur director ‘classist’ and ‘dumb’ for his remarks mocking the genre of TV dramas that Ekta has popularised.
What Did Ekta Kapoor Say
Ekta Kapoor, who recently signed a deal with Netflix, was not happy with Anurag Kashyap’s statement and took to Instagram as well to express her resentment towards the director’s remarks. Without name-dropping him directly, she posted on Instagram: “You are so dumb… saying this puts you at an advantage ‘I’m smarter, cooler’ but naaaaaaaa! Darling, how about gracious and self-aware?”
The TV producer defended the genre by highlighting its social impact. She talked about how such shows have helped to bring women’s voices to mainstream India. Ekta Kapoor said that dubbing saas-bahu content regressive reflects a classist mindset that ‘inclusive’ artists often promote. Ektaa also cited a Chicago study to prove her words.
How Did It All Start
The controversy with Ekta Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap started when Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos went on Nikhil Kamat’s podcast. In the podcast interview, he stated that the team was unsure of kick-starting Indian original content on Netflix with Sacred Games. Anurag, who directed and produced the show, took offence at this statement. He replied by joking that Netflix should have started with airing saas-bahu content instead. He further said, “Tech guys are dumb when it comes to storytelling, but Sarandos is the definition of dumb.”
Ted Sarandos also talked about how he felt that he could have waited two more years before releasing Sacred Games. Instead, they could have picked a show that was more popular and easier to watch for the Indian audience.
He said, “It took us a couple of years to get the product-market fit right. Our very first Indian original show was Sacred Games. And I thought, ‘This is going to be great. People in India love movies. This is a TV show that feels as big as a movie, it has movie stars.’ What’s interesting about it is that it was very, very novel, but what I didn’t understand was that we were introducing a brand new kind of entertainment in a country the size of India.”
Ekta Kapoor has now officially partnered with Netflix. The director announced her collaboration with her production company, Balaji Telefilms. She described the partnership as her “best gift ever,” and hinted at future collaboration with the streaming platforms.
