Did You Know Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver’s Fight Scene From Marriage Story Was Used To Scare Wolves In The USA?

In a bizarre turn of events, a scene from the 2019 drama film Marriage Story, between Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, is being used in real wildlife management. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has apparently adopted an unexpected new tactic to keep wolves away from attacking livestock, by playing the emotionally charged battle scene from the movie through drones hovering over farms.

Why was Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver’s Marriage Story Fight Scene Used to frighten wolves?

In a new report by The Wall Street Journal, the USDA has been testing the use of sound-based deterrents in the American West where wolf attacks on cattle have increased. Drones with thermal imaging and speakers are flown over ranches, playing disconcerting sounds such as fireworks, gunfire, rock music, and in this instance, the now-famous shouting argument in Marriage Story.

The specific scene in this instance involves Johansson and Driver, who are an on-again, off-again couple, in a raw, psychologically intense exchange that went viral due to its drama. The USDA hopes such emotionally charged audio can be used to scare wolves and keep them away from areas of concern.

An Oregon USDA district manager said that the intention is to equate the presence and noise of humans with threat in the minds of wolves. These include very loud, disruptive noises such as fights or obnoxious music (such as AC/DC’s Thunderstruck) as part of a comprehensive deterrent tactic intended to non-lethally minimize loss of livestock.

This change comes after Oregon has reported a troubling increase in wolf activity, with 11 cows slaughtered in just three weeks. Following the installation of the drone-based deterrent system, loss of livestock reportedly decreased noticeably only two cattle were lost in the next almost three months.

The strategy represents an expanding trend of leveraging technology to deal with conflicts between ranchers and predators without incurring damage to protected animals. Gray wolves, which were reintroduced to Yellowstone in 1995, are still a contentious presence throughout western states.
