Ramayana is a story that we have grown up watching and listening to. The story of Ram and Sita has a lot to teach. From the sacrifices of a son to the loyalty of a brother, the Indian Epic has passed on several lessons for generations. Laxman left everything for his brother and went on the 14-year exile. But how much do we know about his wife Urmila and her sacrifices? Here’s what you should know.
Urmila’s Story For 14 Years While Laxman Was On Exile!
To fulfil Kaikeyi’s demand from King Dashrath, Prince Ram went into a 14-year exile. Sita accompanied her husband, and his younger brother, Laxman, never left his side. Laxman was married to Urmila by then, and he left his wife behind to fulfil his brotherly duties. He wanted to stay awake during the night and day to protect his brother and sister-in-law. Therefore, he requested the Goddess of Sleep to grant her the same. While she granted the wish, she set one condition to maintain the balance in the universe. On behalf of Laxman, someone had to sleep for 14 years. Without thinking twice, Urmila took up this responsibility of sleeping for 14 years so her husband could fulfil his duties. However, there is very little mention of this sacrifice in the Ramayana, but one should not forget it.
Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana recently hit theatres. It stars Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Laxman and Yash as Raavan. The film is backed by Namit Malhotra. The film will be released in two parts, and the second one is releasing in Diwali 2028.
