Actor Nithya Menen recently spoke about the unlikeliest and very down-to-earth, experience she had moments before accepting one of the greatest achievements of her life: the National Award. In a recent interview with Cinema Vikatan, Nithya revealed that she literally had cow dung on her fingernails when she got on the stage to accept the award, and she would not have wanted it any other way.

In the interview, Nithya described how she specifically goes in search of stories that allow her to enter new worlds. Describing her experience in Idly Kadai, she mentioned the movie allowed her to experience something she had never done before prepare cow dung cakes manually, the traditional method. She didn’t blink when she was asked if she’d be okay with doing the job. “Of course I said yes,” she remembered. “It was a new thing, and that’s precisely why I’m here, to live as many lives as I can through film.”
The timing couldn’t be more perfect. A day before leaving for Delhi for the National Awards function, Nithya had been filming a scene where she was working with cow dung. She giggled as she recalled going to the posh event with the remnants of the scene still lodged under her fingernails. “Isn’t that just beautiful?” she asked. “That’s life. It’s messy, it’s real and that’s what I love about it.”

Idly Kadai, which is being directed and starring Dhanush, has an array of actors that comprises Arun Vijay, Shalini Pandey, Sathyaraj, Parthiban, among others. This is Nithya’s second outing with Dhanush after Thiruchitrambalam, which won her the National Award she referenced so enthusiastically.
The movie, composed by GV Prakash Kumar, will release on October 1.
