Directed by Mohit Suri, Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, became a mega hit at the box office. The film broke many records and became a fan favourite among the masses, making the protagonists overnight stars. But did you know it took the director a decade-long struggle and closed doors to release the film? In a recent chat, Anurag Kashyap reveals that the film’s success is proof that stubborn belief in a story can change everything.
What Anurag Kashyap Said
During a chat with ANI, Anurag Kashyap shared how rare it is for directors to stick with their vision even after hearing hundreds of no. “Very few people hold on to their stories, like Mohit Suri did with Saiyaara. So many producers refused; nobody understood it,” he said. He revealed that Suri wanted to make the film as he liked and with newcomers, which he made happen. The director suffered for around a decade, but still made it.
Kashyap also mentioned another trend in audience taste: the increased popularity of re-releases. Old titles, such as Pyaasa and Shree 420, as well as Andaz Apna Apna and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, are bringing audiences back to theatres, while many new movies fail to connect. Social media users frequently criticise a lack of new ideas, but Kashyap believes the underlying issue is producers’ unwillingness to take risks on original stories.
