The famous American TV show Emily in Paris has been making headlines with its 5th season, and the fans are loving it. And while we are enjoying Emily’s rendezvous in Rome, it looks like French President Emmanuel Macron wasn’t too happy with this shift, and shared a post on X (Previously Twitter) about ‘fighting hard’ to stop the show from relocating its capital. Read to know more about it here.
Paris Vs Rome For Emily
The premise of Emily in Paris revolves around the character of Lily Collins, named Emily Cooper, an American marketing executive who relocates from Chicago to Paris for work. The show, which captured the eyeballs of the audience in 2020, has now returned for its fifth season in Rome, Italy and let’s just say that the French weren’t so pleased. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, told Variety that they would ask the show to remain in Paris because ‘Emily in Paris in Rome’ didn’t make sense.
For the uninitiated, Macron’s wife, Brigitte, also made a cameo appearance in Season 4 of the show, when Emily spotted her in a café and asked for a selfie. Macron said, “It’s just a few minutes, but I think it was a very good moment for her. I think it’s good for the image of France.” After comments from the French president, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri jokingly replied on X that Emily is happy in Rome and should follow her heart.
He later told The Hollywood Reporter, Roma, that Macron has bigger issues to worry about and likely was joking, noting that Netflix doesn’t take political orders. Gualtieri said he laughed about the remarks with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and added that Emily’s move highlights Rome’s growing importance, suggesting Macron should simply relax.

A January study by France’s National Centre of Cinematography revealed that Emily in Paris boosted tourism in the city despite the clichés. Nearly 10% of the tourists said that a TV show influenced their trip to France, and in 38% of those cases, Emily in Paris was the reason. The Paris tourist office now promotes filming locations from the show, online searches about moving to Paris have risen, and major films typically increase tourism by about 31%. Given this impact, Macron’s displeasure over Emily leaving Paris is unsurprising.
