In his latest role as Seo Dong Ju in SBS’s psychological thriller Buried Hearts, South Korean actor Park Hyung Sik has taken a bold, creative turn. Known for playing romantic and morally upright characters in shows like Strong Girl Bong Soon, Happiness, and Doctor Slump, Hyung Sik now portrays a layered, morally complex executive entangled in a web of betrayal, ambition, and buried trauma. His performance has drawn attention for its emotional intensity and departure from his earlier roles. In a recent conversation with Hindustan Times, Park Hyung Sik opened up on a lot of different topics, and here’s what he said,
Park Hyung Sik Opens Up On His Roles
During the conversation with Hindustan Times, Park Hyung Sik reflected on what drew him to this darker character and how it aligns with his journey as an actor. He said that Dong Ju is someone who is navigating life’s harsh realities and is hiding pain behind a cold exterior, and that is why he wanted to bring out a part of himself that viewers haven’t seen before. Something which was emotionally raw and more complex, he added.
The decision to take on Buried Hearts appears to be a conscious shift, according to Park Hyung Sik, as he mentioned in the interview how it was a deliberate choice for him. He said that as an actor, he feels it’s important to break out of the roles people are expecting him to play. He also said that there is a tendency in the industry to box characters, and he wanted to show how he can take risks and show different shades of his acting.
Director Jing Chang Kyu has praised Hyung Sik’s performance and commitment to the role, a gesture the actor acknowledged with gratitude.
Park Hyung Sik expressed his openness to international projects, including Indian cinema, sharing that he was deeply moved by the film 3 Idiots. He added that if a story with a meaningful and heartfelt message came his way, he would be honoured to be involved, emphasizing that cinema today is more globally connected than ever before.
Reflecting on his life in the spotlight, he said that his family, friends, and fans continue to be the most important pillars in his life. While acknowledging that it’s challenging to maintain a balance between personal and professional commitments, he mentioned that he tries to carve out small moments of peace whenever possible.
When asked to describe himself as an actor in a single word, Hyung Sik chose Sketchbook, explaining that he aspires to be someone who can adapt and embody various roles depending on the narrative.
On a lighter note, when asked what he would say to Seo Dong Ju, the character he plays in Buried Hearts, Hyung Sik said he’d thank him for enduring so much and tell him it’s okay to finally rest, a reflection of the emotional depth he invested in the role.
