Did Dia Mirza Really Support Release Of Fawad Khan’s Movie Abir Gulaal? Here’s The Actual Truth!

Pakistani actor Fawad Khan’s highly anticipated Bollywood comeback film, Abir Gulal, is facing uncertainty following the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 that claimed 26 civilian lives. In the aftermath, conversations around cross-border artistic collaborations have resurfaced, especially after an old interview with actress Dia Mirza began circulating online, where she appeared to support Fawad’s return to Hindi cinema.

However, Dia Mirza has now set the record straight. The actress took to Instagram to clarify that her remarks supporting Fawad Khan were made well before the Pahalgam attack and are being shared out of context. In her statement, she called out sections of the media for “misrepresenting facts” and stressed that the interview took place on April 10, over a week before the tragedy occurred. Her Instagram story read, in essence, that it was unfair and unethical for the media to circulate her comments weeks later, during a sensitive time, and attach them to the ongoing controversy surrounding Abir Gulal. She urged media outlets to stop linking her previous statements with the current situation.

The original remarks made by Dia, which are now being scrutinised, came during a promotional interview for her own film. In that conversation, she spoke broadly about the role of art in bridging divides. She said that while bans on artists are political decisions, her personal belief has always been that art should act as a tool for unity and peace, not division. She also said she was looking forward to watching Fawad back on screen and hoped it would lead to more collaborative efforts in the future.

But the situation around Abir Gulaal changed drastically after the Pahalgam attack. Public sentiment shifted, and there was a renewed call to bar Pakistani talent from the Indian entertainment industry. On April 24, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) released a statement urging a complete boycott of all Pakistani artists, including actors, singers, and technicians. The body stated it would do everything in its power to prevent Abir Gulal from being released in India.

Industry insiders told Hindustan Times that film exhibitors are now reluctant to screen the movie, citing public backlash. Discussions between the production house and theatre chains are ongoing, but insiders suggest that the May 9 release may be postponed until the situation stabilizes. For now, the film’s fate remains in limbo, and whether or not Indian audiences will see Fawad Khan return to Bollywood remains an open question.
