James Gunn’s much-awaited Superman, which released in India on July 11 alongside its global premiere, is not being shown in its original form to Indian audiences. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has made a few edits to the film for its release in India, including the removal of a kiss scene between the lead actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.
CBFC Censors James Gunn’s Superman Movie For India Release
According to reports, the CBFC cut a 33-second sequence that featured Superman and Lois Lane sharing a kiss while floating mid-air. This particular moment was even part of the film’s promotional trailer but is mostly absent in the Indian version. Additionally, a second kiss shared by the characters earlier in the movie has also been trimmed down. The cuts have been described as noticeable and have left some viewers confused during early screenings.
Apart from removing the kiss scenes, the CBFC has also muted multiple instances of strong language and edited out an eight-second visual involving what the board considered a foul gesture. These edits were reportedly requested by CBFC members to make the film more suitable for Indian theatrical audiences.
This is not the first time Hollywood films have faced such censorship in India. The CBFC has a long history of making cuts in international releases, particularly when it comes to scenes involving intimacy, profanity, or gestures considered inappropriate. Recently, the board was criticised for altering a middle finger emoji to a closed fist in the Brad Pitt-led film F1 as well.
