“Women Hiring Women Makes A Huge Difference,” Says Darlings Director Jasmeet K Reen. Hear Hear!

There is a paradigm shift in the content produced by the film industry when it comes to women. And what has primarily caused this huge change is that we are seeing a lot of relevant issues being brought to light by female filmmakers. Also, the margin of having females on the set has also increased lately. At Netflix’s recent event called Her Story, Her Voice, Darlings director Jasmet K Reen talked about how women hiring women makes a huge difference in seeing more contributions by them on the sets.

Jasmeet K Reen offered a very interesting aspect to the whole more women on sets scenario. She said, “Earlier, women used to be costume ADs only. Right now, my art director, Garima, she has an all-women crew. What happens with art directors is that they are dealing with a lot of men who are carpenters and painters because they are making the set.”

Talking about the change she has seen on movie sets in terms of having more women working, Jasmeet K Reen said, “Right now, there are female camerapersons, female gaffers and even women in the lighting department which is very, very rare.” She added that women hiring women also makes a huge difference.

Reen also went on to say that the film Thappad was released when they were making Darlings. But when she saw the film, she noticed that it was not even close to what her film had to offer. She said having more female filmmakers and female writers brings a variety of perspectives on the same subject.

This stands absolutely true. In fact, women not only bring a different perspective, but they also make things seem real despite being cinematic. The topics they shed light on are very much humane and resonate with the watchers.

Jasmeet’s film Darlings starred Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Verma and Risham Mathew among others. The film offered an interesting take on domestic violence.
