Music director Daboo Malik opened up about his involvement in the emotional struggles of his older son, Amaal Mallik, this year. In March, Amaal went public with the fact that he had broken personal relations with his family and was fighting clinical depression, blaming his parents and the estrangement with his younger brother, Armaan Mallik.
What Did Daboo Malik Say About Amaal Malik
In an interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani recently, Daboo confessed that he had initially brushed off Amaal’s social media status as a publicity stunt. However, after reading it thoroughly, he understood that his son was devastated. He tried to mend the relationship and spent more than two weeks with Amaal, providing him with emotional support and attempting to figure out what had happened.
Looking back on what happened, Daboo explained that he realised that Amaal’s move to open up his feelings publicly was a result of pent-up emotions he had been keeping to himself. He conceded that as parents, they did not mean to take Amaal for granted, and they were so busy developing Armaan’s singing career. Because the elder brother, the family thought, was capable of keeping himself in line.
Daboo conceded that in bringing out Armaan as a pop sensation, they lost sight of Amaal’s own ambitions for being known. He also acknowledged that comparisons by parents and insensitive comments might have caused him pain. These errors notwithstanding, Daboo lauded Amaal’s gargantuan contribution to the music scene, citing that he has written more than 80 hit songs.
Amaal’s March Instagram post presented a stark picture of his mental state. He posted that his serenity had been “stolen,” his self-esteem drained hundreds of times, and his emotional capital depleted. Although he blamed himself in part for his woes, he indicated that actions by his loved ones had done irreparable harm. From then on, he said, his relationships with his relatives would be strictly professional.
