Actor Jyotika, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming series Dabba Cartel, recently spoke about the sexism she continues to experience in the film industry. Despite having an established career spanning decades, she revealed in an interview with News18 that being married to superstar Suriya often leads to subtle but persistent discrimination.
Jyotika On Casual S*xism In The Industry
During the conversation, Jyotika candidly discussed how the industry perceives her differently due to her marriage. She explained that even in simple interactions, the bias is evident. “I’m married to a superstar, so I face it every now and then, even today,” she said. She pointed out the difference in how compliments are received if she expresses gratitude for having Suriya as a husband, people acknowledge that he is a great person. However, if Suriya praises her, it is framed as an extraordinary gesture on his part, reinforcing traditional gender expectations.
Jyotika also shared how sexism extends beyond words and into everyday situations. “I may buy a car, but someone else is expected to press the button and check the features,” she said, highlighting how even financial independence does not exempt women from ingrained societal biases. She added that she could list countless similar experiences, which over time, can even lead to an identity crisis for women.
Jyotika and Suriya’s love story began on the sets of the 1999 Tamil film Poovellam Kettuppar. Their bond grew stronger over the years, and they eventually tied the knot in 2006. The couple has since built a family together, welcoming their daughter, Diya, in 2007 and their son, Dev, in 2010. Despite being one of Tamil cinema’s most celebrated couples, Jyotika’s experiences highlight the ongoing challenges women face in both personal and professional spheres.
