Exclusive: Comedian Swati Sachdeva: “I’ve Been Abused On Random Panel Shows Because Of…”

There has been constant debate and judgement about how women react in different situations. Some criticise them for staying quiet or showing little emotion, while others complain when they react strongly or emotionally. Comedian Swati Sachdeva recently addressed this issue in an exclusive interview on Hauterrfly’s The Male Feminist, hosted by Siddhaarth Aalambayan. Read on to know all about it.

Swati Sachdeva spoke openly about how people constantly judge her face and expressions. She often looks serious or blank, which worries her because others think she is unfriendly. She said, “I’m not a likeable personality. My face is like this. I’m worried about my expressions. I’ve been abused on random panel shows. Why is my face like this? The editor has shown you what was happening on that show. I know why my face was like this.”

The comedian further described the Indian audience as both soft and naive. She said, “First of all, the Indian audience is very soft. They are very naive. They buy anything they see. Everyone knows that PR is going on. Why should I do what you think is very generous? If you are someone who comes from an underprivileged background and you have a story in which you are a victim, you’ve already won. India loves it. When you want to try different genres, you want to be antisocial.”

Furthermore, Swati Sachdeva stated that the only bad comedy comes from poorly written jokes. If the writing is strong and smart, audiences will eventually accept all of it. She wants to keep trying new things without always trying to please everyone.

The comedian also shared that she faced intense pressure to get married starting at age 24. Her father believed the search should begin early so she could settle by 27, which left her confused about her love life and career. She explained she identifies as bisexual and not lesbian.
