In-laws in India get a bad rep. I think a lot of it has to do with the Ekta Kapoor serials we grew up with. To be fair, a lot of the times the in-laws don’t really treat the daughter-in-law well and tend to treat them as caretakers for their son and household. And any woman who opposes that is ostracised. However, there are times when I hear stories of in-laws genuinely just being so nice and supportive of their daughter-in-laws that I feel like there is still hope in this world. Such is the case of Bharti Singh as she spoke about her relationship with her Gujrati father-in-law as a punjabi woman. Her response was hilarious and heart-warming.
Bharti Singh is married to Haarsh Limbachiyaa who hails from Gujrat and the couple is expecting a child as well. The comedian was recently seen on Twinterview, an interview show hosted on YouTube by twin sisters Chinki and Minki. When asked if she ever has conflicts with her Gujrati in-laws as they come from a dry state, Bharti dismissed it claiming that people in Gujrat drink too. “Nahi nahi, ab wo state bhi drinking wali hogai hai. Ab to sasur ji bhi saath me cheers karte hain,” she said.
Bharti also recalled all the times her father-in-law calls her at work to ask if he can start having drinks without her. Aww love their bond! She said that he calls and asks, “Beta, kholu kya main’. Main bolti hu, ‘arey ruko na 20 minutes me aari hu.’ Fir bhi wo khol chuke hote hain.”

When asked what were the most expensive and cheap gifts she got for her wedding, Bharti did not directly answer but indicated that someone went all the way to their Goa wedding and just gave then 6 cups of ice-cream. Honestly, I need a back story! Bharti hilariously saif that Harsh and her barely fight because when they do, she removes his glasses and he keeps bumping into things as a result. As a person who needs glasses, I feel attacked.
When there are so many horror stories of how certain in-laws treat their daughter-in-laws, I like hearing stories such as Bharti Singh’s where she can unapologetically be who she wants to be without being shamed. Moreover, her father-in-law loves and accepts her for it!
