Chinese microdramas are all the rage among those in the know. With extremely unbelievable plots, they originated on social media platforms in the country. Slowly, however, they’ve made their way onto short-form content on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Recently, the regulatory bodies of the East Asian country platforms have cracked down on unchecked content in this rapidly growing industry. Read all about it below!

China Microdrama Industry Stands Against Dubious Content, Platforms Tighten Regulations And Remove Series

This is not the first large-scale content overhaul. However, considering the rampant unregulated content, this feels like a step in the right direction. Several platforms, namely Kuaishou, Hongguo Short Drama, Taobao, and WeChat, announced that they would take strict action to curb the spread of “problematic” microdramas.

The new content regulations have caused about 530 short-form dramas to face interception, revision, or straight-up removal. It is said this is because they violated the new guidelines. Specifically, the platforms attempted to tackle an important gap in the way child characters are handled in microdramas.

According to the content platforms, the tightened regulations mean they have had to fix large quantities of previously released shows. Hongguo, a short drama platform, revealed that February 2026 saw them act on 205 series. It stated they had been blocked or removed. According to representatives, part of this number was cracked down on before release, while the rest was picked up in follow-up reviews. Moreover, another 160 microdramas (approximately) showing dubious representation of young children were then removed or asked to make alterations.

Kuaishou did not disclose details about its monitoring efforts. However, it stated stricter inspection on short-form dramas. Apparently, the platform took initiatives to constrain accounts that circulated questionable content. WeChat similarly said it ousted “dozens” of short-form series that weren’t produced well or went against the app’s community standards. It also penalized accounts like Kuiashou.

Taobao, active in E-commerce (similar to Amazon), disclosed that it removed 56 microdramas in February. According to reports, the shows were thematically against guidelines, leaning on blind superstitions or egregious vengeance plots.

The regulations will now be stricter about allowing the publication of content featuring children in roles that make them manipulative or strong emotional subplots. While the crackdown is not new, the focus on children in these shows is the need of the hour for these Chinese microdramas!
