Cha Eun Woo Tax Case: Details About Complaints Against K-pop Idol’s Tax Investigation Leak

On February 10, 2026, Taxpayers’ Union, a civil organisation that honours the tax and privacy rights of Korean citizens, registered a complaint against two unnamed individuals. One of them was an unspecified tax investigator who leaked details of Cha Eun Woo’s fresh investigation. The other was the journalist who broke the story. It filed a complaint at the National Police Agency’s National Investigation Headquarters, for “violating the Personal Information Protection Act and criminal secrecy breaches.”

The union elaborated on the privacy breach that spread the ASTRO member’s tax information to the public. Additionally, it said this could damage the reputation of the persons involved. Citing the case of the late Korean actor Lee Sun Kyun, the Taxpayers’ Union added that their complaint did not imply to justify any particular person (here, Cha Eun Woo), but to ensure that “tax information is always securely protected.” Similarly, it affirmed its focus on stopping the widespread circulation of unproven allegations.
