Laapataa Ladies is facing serious plagiarism accusations after a video went viral on the internet. In the video we could see scenes from the Kiran Rao directorial next to scenes from the short film Burqa City. The director of Burqa City, Fabrice Bracq, has now spoken about this controversy with India Today. Read on to know more!
Director Fabrice Bracq On Similarities Between Burqa City And Laapataa Ladies
Bracq said that even before he watched Laapataa Ladies, he was struck by how similar the basic idea was. After watching it, he was both surprised and very shocked. He noticed that even though the story was set in India, many parts of his film were clearly present. Bracq specifically mentioned the contrast between the kind, innocent husband who loses his wife and the other husband who is mean and violent.
He also pointed out the scene with the police officer, describing him as a dishonest, violent, and scary figure with two helpers. Another striking similarity, according to Bracq, was the moment with the picture of the woman wearing a veil. He also noted the scene where the kind husband looks for his wife in different shops, showing the shopkeepers a picture of her with her face covered, just like in Burqa City.
Furthermore, Bracq talked about the similarity in the ending of both stories, where it’s revealed that the woman deliberately ran away from her abusive husband. He felt that Laapataa Ladies carried a similar message about women gaining their freedom and feminist ideas.
Moreover, Biplab Goswami, the writer of Laapataa Ladies, has responded to these accusations. He stated that the screenplay for his film was developed over a long period. Biplab first registered a detailed summary of the film’s story in 2014 with the title Two Brides. Biplab further added that he registered the full-length script of ‘Two Brides’ in 2018.
