The day of Buddha Purnima is an auspicious festival for Buddhists in India and around the world, too. It marks the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, and also the day he was enlightened. This year, Buddha Purnima takes place on Monday, May 12, 2025, celebrating Gautam Buddha’s 2587th birth anniversary. Here is the historical significance of the event and wishes you can use to celebrate it!

Significance

Gautam Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini, which is modern-day Nepal, in 563 BC. When he was older, Siddhartha revoked all the worldly luxuries and chose the life of a saint to find the path of enlightenment. Lord Buddha was a philosopher, spiritual guide, and religious leader. He is considered the ninth Vishnu avatar by Hindus, and the influence of Buddhism spreads in countries like Thailand, China, and Cambodia too.

The celebration takes place on the first Purnima, or full moon day of the Hindu month of Vaisakha.  People celebrate by visiting temples and monasteries, offering prayers and meditation, reciting sutras, and practicing charity and compassion. For Buddhists, it is a day to consider the three main teachings of Buddhism: enlightenment, compassion, and peace.
