Recently, BTS took part in Wired’s Autocomplete Interview and answered questions that people often search for on Google. One of them was about the real meaning of Suga’s stage name.
For many years, the ‘Daechwita’ singer gave varied answers. In 2013, he said Bang PD named him Suga because he looked pale and had adorable eyes, so it would give him a sweet image. Later that year, he linked it to his bright skin and lovely smile. In 2023, he told fans it was short for “shooting guard”, which is a position in basketball – a sport he enjoys a lot.

But in the recent interview, the ‘Daechwita’ singer shared the “actual” truth. This time, Suga opened up about the real reason and explained that the full story felt too long and complicated to share every single time, so he used a shorter version instead.
The actual inspiration came from the legendary American boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, known for his smart and precise fighting style. People with great technical skills in boxing often get called “Suga”. Therefore, Bang PD, who enjoys boxing, suggested the name because Yoongi’s rap style is also very technical and sharp.
When he said the name, fans and even member V were shocked and amused. The ‘Slow Dancing’ singer did not believe him at first and thought Suga was joking again. ARMYs also did not know whether to believe him or not, as they had heard so many different stories over the years and wondered which one was really true.
