Hacker Who Stole Rs. 52 Crores From BTS Jungkook Gets Arrested In Thailand

Back in 2023, BTS Jungkook fell victim to a hacking scheme where a hacker stole over 8.40 billion KRW (approximately Rs. 52,83,00,000) from the K-pop idol. Now, on August 22, the South Korean Ministry of Justice has announced that they have caught the hacker, who is a 34-year-old Chinese citizen. The man was extradited from Bangkok, Thailand, to Seoul, South Korea today. Read on to know more.
Hacker Who Stole Rs. 52 Crore From BTS Jungkook Gets Arrested
According to the police, the hacker identified as‘Mr. ‘A’ was the leader of a hacking ring that operated across Thailand and other Asian countries. Their list of crimes includes breaching personal data from websites and telecom services by creating mobile phone accounts under their victims’ names and gaining access to their finances. The syndicate has reportedly stolen over ₩38.0 billion KRW (approximately Rs. 2,389,000,000) from wealthy individuals and public figures in South Korea.
One of the most well-known victims of this crime syndicate was BTS Jungkook. According to reports, Jungkook’s securities accounts and shares were stolen shortly after his military enlistment in 2023. The hackers had transferred around 33,5000 HYBE shares belonging to BTS Jungkook worth 8.40 billion KRW (approximately Rs. 52,83,00,000), and out of that sold
One of the victims of this hacking ring was Jungkook. According to reports, Jungkook’s securities accounts were compromised shortly after his military enlistment last year. The hackers transferred 33,5000 shares of HYBE stock worth 8.40 billion KRW (about $6.00 million USD), and out of that, sold 500 shares, worth 126 million KRW (about $90,000 USD), to a third party.
BIGHIT MUSIC reportedly identified the hacker’s activity immediately and froze Jungkook’s remaining shares before further losses occurred. The K-pop idol later filed a civil lawsuit against the buyer of the stolen shares. The Seoul Western District Court ruled that the stock transfer was invalid, citing that Jungkook was a victim of identity theft, and ordered the stolen shares to be returned.

Unfortunately, BTS Jungkook is not the only high-profile victim of the crime syndicate. They even targeted some wealthy South Korean CEOs and chairmen, making the theft one of the most sophisticated financial crimes in South Korea. The ring leader, Mr. A, was being hunted down by the Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and Interpol and was finally caught in Thailand.
