BTS’ Gwanghwamun Square Concert Creates Possible New Scam For Seoul Business Owners?

The victim then received a call from the number on the notice, which identified the sender as a representative of Seoul Fire and Disaster Headquarters. Claiming that new regulations required specialised equipment ahead of BTS’ massive show at Gwanghwamun Square, the scammer said owners must purchase it from a specific store designated for this purpose. Government subsidies for the same would also be provided after setup.

After looking at the logo and signature of the fire officials, the business owner sent the company in question approximately $677 USD ( 1 million Korean won). This would be used to buy 2 specific devices as delineated in the message sent.

The person impersonating a public official then refunded about $812 USD (1.2 million Korean won). He claimed it was the subsidy being reimbursed.

Soon, the scammer grew bold and said the anonymous Seoul resident must purchase 10 units of fire extinguishers. As they were powered by lithium-ion batteries, the price seemed to be a whopping $2,020 USD (2.98 million Korean Won) each. Asking the business owner to pay the total amount first, and he would receive $23,700 USD (35 million Korean won) later. Although the procedure seemed similar to the one earlier, the victim now grew suspicious of this transaction amount.

Directly reaching out to Seoul Fire And Disaster Headquarters, he found the truth. The representatives said there was no one by the name provided by the scammer working. Thankfully, the business owner was cautious to not transfer big amounts and was saved from losing more money.
