Kim Hyeong Mook Explains Why His Chinese In Bon Appétit, Your Majesty Sounded So Strange
The actor revealed he was only given this much time to prepare for the role.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty became one of 2025’s most successful K-dramas this year. The show also became Netflix’s most adored K-drama, known for its stellar cast, unique plot and iconic scenes. However, while the show was airing, one frequent complaint that viewers had was the conversations between the King’s chefs and the Chinese Ming chefs. The actor who played the Chinese chef, Kim Hyeong Mook, has finally spoken out and offered fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse of his acting process. Read on to know more.
Many viewers criticised the Chinese-speaking scenes in Bon Appétit, Your Majesty. A post talking about it went viral on Reddit, where people called the delivery of the language unnatural and inaccurate. Many even said that the Chinese-speaking scenes made them want to stop watching the show.

Now, the actor, Kim Hyeon Wook, who played the role of envoy Yu Kun in Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, revealed the reason behind his rough pronunciation in a recent interview. Hywon Wook revealed his butchered pronunciation was because it was his first time speaking the language.

“ I played Minister Yeom Heung Jip in last year’s MBC series, Knight Flower. The director liked my work enough to contact me. At first, I thought it was just a cameo. About a month before the shoot began, it was decided that I would deliver all my lines in Chinese. Practically, I had only two weeks to prepare,” revealed the actor.

Kim Hyeong Mook also admitted that he thought about giving up at one point due to the short amount of time he was given to prepare for the role, saying, “I barely slept some nights. At times, I thought, ‘Should I just not do this?’ But deep down, I knew I wanted to push my limits. At first, I focused on the basics: the script, pronunciation, and foundational skills.”

However, despite the hard time, Kim Hyeong Wook says that he looks back at his time shooting for Bon Appétit, Your Majesty with fondness. He gained a lot of confidence and is even regularly attending a Chinese language academy to learn the language fluently.
