The Bollywood rom-coms of the 2000s hold a special place in many hearts. Recently, there’s been a lot of talk about how that special magic seems to be missing from recent films, and many viewers really miss it. In an exclusive interview with Hauterrfly, Kunal Kohli, the director behind popular films like Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Hum Tum, shared his opinion on the same. Here’s what he said!
Kunal Kohli On Audience Missing 2000s Rom-Com Era
Talking about the lost magic of romcoms in the current era, Kunal Kohli said, “I think what’s missing is the understanding of romance and music that filmmakers like me have. We have a certain maturity; we have a certain understanding of romance. Unfortunately, some of the other directors don’t have that. I am being very honest; just putting it out there. And the other thing is that I think our heroes don’t have the conviction anymore for love stories. The day a hero comes with a conviction like, Yes, I want to do a love story, then they will come.”
Furthermore, he talked about Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story’s trailer. He said, “Why is this trailer working? The hero and heroine believe in the subject. They believe in let’s do this film and let’s just try something new. Every love story comes with a different audience. This has been designed for the Disney+Hotstar audience and home viewing, but it is still giving you the scale and grandeur. I think today we can still make those kinds of films because the audience is really thirsty for them.” On the work front, director Kunal Kohli is currently busy promoting Bobby Aur Rishi Ki Love Story, starring Vardhaan Puri and Kaveri Kapur. You can watch it on Disney+Hotstar.
