Bloody Daddy Review: Shahid Kapoor Starrer Is Bloody Intense But Riddled With Loopholes
Shahid looks bloody hawt!

I’ve always been a Shahid Kapoor fan, not just because of how cute he looks (though my heart broke when he married Mira) but also for his kickass acting skills. Shahid Kapoor won me over, first with his boyish charm and then with his rugged handsomeness and dialogue delivery. However, his recent comments about marriage have been rather heartbreaking. But that did not stop me from watching his latest film Bloody Daddy. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and produced by Jio Studios, Bloody Daddy stars Shahid Kapoor, Sanjay Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Diana Penty, Rajeev Khandelwal, Ankur Bhatia and Vivan Bhatena. The film happens to be a remake of the French Film Sleepless Night. Read on for my review of this Shahid Kapoor starrer that is currently streaming on the OTT app Jio Cinema.
The Story Of Bloody Daddy
Set in 2021 after the country opened after the second Covid-19 induced lockdown, Bloody Daddy follows Shahid Kapoor’s Sumair who is a narcotics bureau officer. The film opens with Shahid Kapoor and his colleague Jaggi wearing masks as the attack some goons in a car smuggling drugs. The duo steals the bag of drugs from them at Delhi’s Connaught Place, which soon leads to drama as Sumair’s son Atharva gets kidnapped by the drug kingpin and owner of a leading hotel in Gurugram, Sikander (played by Ronit Roy) and his brother Danny (played by Vivan Bhatena). As Rajeev Khandelwal’s character Sameer, who is an anti-corruption bureau officer investigates the case of the shootout and accident at Connaught Place along with a female cop (played by Diana Penty). On the other hand, things turn bloody for Sumair as he tries to rescue his son by returning the bag of drugs that he stole but Diana Penty as a female cop turns out to be trouble for Sumair while Rajeev Khandelwal’s Sameer seems to be out to get Sumair. Will Sumair be able to save his son? How will his bloody battle for his son end? What is Sumair’s real motive? What game is this dirty cop playing at? Well, you’ll just have to watch the film to find out.

Cast And Characters
Shahid Kapoor as Sumair: Shahid Kapoor aced the role of a flawed but loving father while balancing it with his dark side as a dirty cop. It’s interesting to watch Shahid play the new-age father who provides his kid with luxuries but does not shy away from reminding him of the importance of staying humble. As always, the actor has rocked the dialogue delivery. Shahid as an action hero is an absolute treat to watch as he beats up goons and gets his hands bloody to be a daddy for his drugs and for his son. We’re just here to watch Shahid in his daddy era. Keep the daddy coming!
Ronit Roy as Sikander: I’ve been a Ronit Roy fan ever since his television days and boy, oh boy, the actor will not only manage to grab eyeballs but he will hold your attention and keep you hooked to the screen every time he appears. Ronit as a villain, with his dialogue delivery skills and his dialogues packed with dark humour is a match made in heaven. We need to see Ronit playing the baddie more often.
Sartaaj Kakkar as Atharva: Sartaaj’s Atharva and Shahid’s Sumair play the perfect father-son duo. Their camaraderie is hard to miss and an absolute pleasure to watch on-screen. Satraaj Kakkar proved his mettle in acting by breathing life into his character and making him rather relatable for Gen Z. I mean, the kid wants milk without milk. Oops, I mean milk without lactose….

Rajeev Khandelwal as Sameer: Rajeev’s character Sameer is a complex person to watch on-screen and I’m sure he’s a complex character to play as well but being the brilliant actor that Rajeev is, he eased into his character and played him like a pro. But NGL, it makes you want to see more of Rajeev Khandelwal (that’s your cue, sir. Thoda aur OTT kar lo, we miss you).

Sanjay Kapoor as Hameed: Despite being a kickass actor, I wonder what made Sanjay Kapoor sign up for this role that has literally nothing to offer. Hameed is a shallow character with little to no backstory and no depth whatsoever. Had Hameed not been there, we wouldn’t have missed him the film.

Diana Penty as Aditi: The actress and her character have been underutilised in the film and how! And that’s not all. From where I stand, the actress has been shown as a rather dumb cop who was clueless AF. Wow, the sheer existence of this character is proof of how misogyny is ingrained in us. She’s shown to be a cop who does not know how a drugs case or evidence should be handled and who has not gut instinct but it’s important to note, she’s the one who spotted and followed Shahid’s Sumair in the first place. There we go with a loophole in a character!

Vivan Bhatena and Ankur Bhatia did a great job providing support in the film but it is essential to note that while the actors gave their 100% to their characters, the writers did not. These two ace actors were also underutilized just like Diana Penty and Sanjay Kapoor. We honestly wouldn’t have missed these characters if the writers did not write them. THEY DID NOT HAVE MUCH TO OFFER.

Verdict: We Have Unanswered Questions
Shahid Kapoor has come out as a true-blue action hero in Bloody Daddy and are bloody glad or are we bloody glad? The actors have delivered their best performances. There’s a lot that this film has going for it. It’s an intense and brutal action film with loads of drama and some witty dialogues and dark humour. Shahid Kapoor’s Sumair reminding his son to be a normal kid and drink full-fat milk is hilarious but so, is Ronit Roy’s Sikander cringing about the Gen Z kid who wants milk without milk. We totally felt Ronit, in that moment. The film has light comedy here and there that keeps you going. And if you’re a through-and-through action fan, this is the film for you but mind you, it does have its downsides.
Speaking of downsides, Bloody Daddy has quite a few. To begin with, it lacks a plot. The beginning of the film feels like you’re watching something from the middle and the makers don’t stop to even explain what’s going on or give any context. With what little context you have, the sub-plots do not make sense and the characters leave you feeling confused AF. 10 minutes into the film and there’s nothing you do not know about this storyline, that’s how predictable it is. The twists and turns we see are not very surprising. It’s literally the story of a man who got blood on his hands to get his son but nothing else makes sense.

Shahid Kapoor’s character seems to be a man with ulterior motives but the makers did not want to bother themselves by letting us know his motives. The man literally asks his son to run the second he gets him back from the goon. Toh tum kahan chale bhaiya? But again, no clarity so no one knows. Is the dude after drugs? Is he an undercover cop as he claims? Who TF knows! And wait, there’s more. What is Sumair’s connection with Aditi? Why did Jaggi call her Sumair’s flame? How did Atharva get kidnapped? Wasn’t he just in his hotel room? What is Jaggi’s history with Sameer? How did he suddenly share the deets of his dirty deed with him? What is Sumair’s motive? Why did he steal the drugs? Does he have ulterior motives? What about Sameer? What game is he playing? Who is he hiding the drugs for? Who is this person with a private number? Does Aditi not find Sameer’s behaviour suspicious? Why TF would Aditi tell Sameer about Sumair going undercover? When did Aditi switch sides? How did Aditi and Sumair pull off whatever it is that they were trying to pull off in the end?

Sawal kai, jawab nahi! But that’s not all. As if the loopholes weren’t enough, none of these subplots in the storyline come together to make any sense at all in the end. To add to it, the film begins at a breakneck speed and keeps the pace during the first half but it begins to falter in the second half. The film does not have a beginning, middle or an end. It just has action, drama and hilarious punchlines along with a trippy background score that will keep you on the edge of your seat. All in all, this film is a BLOODY stylish action film but it doesn’t have anything more to offer. So, I’m rating it 2.5 out of 5 stars.
